Let's Eat Y'all! {White Chicken Chili}

I have been wanting to try a white chicken chili recipe for a while. A facebook friend (Thanks, Tara!) posted this one and I gave it a whirl - it was great!

I have made it several times as directed below and in the CrockPot as well.

White Chicken Chili:

2 boneless chicken breasts

2 cans chicken broth

1/2 tsp lemon pepper seasoning

1 tsp cumin

1 tbsp olive oil

1 minced garlic glove

1/2 cup sweet onions, chopped {I don't use the onions}

1 can white corn ( drained )

1 4oz can green chilies ( undrained )

2-3 tbsp lime juice {I used fresh limes}

1 can great nothern beans ( undrained )

shredded monterey jack cheese to garnish

Tara's Directions

In large pot combine broth, cumin, lemon pepper and olive oil bring to boil. Add chicken and cook on medium until chicken is done around 25 mins. Remove chicken cut into bite size pcs, return to pot. Add garlic, onion, chilies, lime juice and beans. Return to boil. Let simmer for 45 mins. Pour into bowl and sprinkle w/ cheese. I usually make cornbread to serve w/ this!

J is for Jennifer {Courthouses, Marriages, and Texts - oh my!}

Jennifer is my baby sister.
I can't say "little sister", as she has been taller than me since she was a preteen.
I can't say "younger sister", because that indicates that I am older. and I am by 7 years
So, even though she is over 30, she is still my baby sister.
Last week, I received a text message from her that went like this...

"Hey. Terry and I got married at lunch."

Now, blog friends, I ask you, is this acceptable?!?

I responded, "Oh really."
Frankly, it was all I could think of to say!
She and Terry have been dating and cohabitating for years, now, but still.

Moments later I received a text from my Mother that went like this...
"DID YOU JUST GET A TEXT FROM JENNIFER?"
Classic Jennifer. Insert flashabck to when she slipped my Mother a note in her purse to announce that she was pregnant with my niece 13 years ago.
A little later, in our texting, Mother mentioned that she had investigated a bit and inquired as to if there was a reason for the sudden marriage, and there wasn't.
They had just "been thinking about it for a while and decided to do it".
Really.
Well, had I known, I could have at least shown up on my lunch break with a Happy Meal or something for the bride and groom.
Nevertheless, they are married just the same.

My Aunt Made them a cake after the fact. It was delicious.

So that is how it went down, in C-town. Baby sister went off to the court house and got married and we all received a text message.

My Dad doesn't own a cell phone. Wonder if he knows yet?????

Something B said...

Brodie started a string of questions the other morning on the way to school. Most of them were of the "What school will I go to after elementary?" and "How old will I be then?" variety. He also wanted to know what college he would attend. I told him he could go to any college he wants, and named a few. He asked how old he would be then, and I said, "18."

It made me swallow hard to think about it, even now. It also scared me. It is scary sometimes thinking of all of the things that can happen in life between now and then, but I try to put it out of my mind and just hope and pray for the best. What else can we do?

Brodie said, "EIGHTEEN?! DO you mean ANDY was EIGHTEEN when he went off to college?!"
{insert ToyStory3 reference}.
I said, "Yes," and as we were pulling up to the curb, he quietly thought hard for a minute and then he said, very matter-of-fact, "I think I will go to University, Mommy." And with that he ran off happily to his Kindergarten class.

Something b said...

The other day, Blayd and I were in the car when a lady veered in our lane. I yelled, "Watch out lady!" At that moment, Blayd started screaming in her car's direction, "Watch out lady! We're gonna kick your butt!" {Have I mentioned I STRONGLY dislike Spongebob and his karate episode?}

Fast forward a few days and Blayd was in the grocery line with my Mother when a lady bumped his leg with her cart as she entered the checkout area. You guessed it, he looked straight at her and yelled, "Watch out lady!" {thank goodness he left off the Spongebob line}

My Mother apologized, explained that he was 4, and she was sorry, but that lady was ticked and made LOUD comments to her friend about his behavior and about what people "aren't teachin' they kids today" and blah blah. Thank God, my Mother ignored her, and thank God I wasn't there.

People who don't have little kids often do not understand the lengths we go to try to get them to behave, and despite our efforts, they are kids - and kids say and do things that they shouldn't. And we correct and punish them in the privacy of our home - not by causing scenes in the middle of a grocery store.

And many times, the bigger deal you make of something, the more they do it.

Case in point, we went to Target later that evening and as a lady on her shopping scooter whizzed toward our shopping cart he yelled out, "Watch out lady!" Without missing a beat, I covered quickly by sweetly saying, "Don't yell at me" honey bun, I know where I am going, and I am being careful."

I think she bought it.

This Sunset engulfed my spirit on the drive home Monday.

It was amazing.

It was INSPIRING.

But maybe not as INSPIRING as this Lady...

...who was beginning a 700+ page book

as I left her house Monday afternoon.

...who my spirit passed through within my Mother

before I was even born into this world.

...who may be reaching the sunset of her journey here

but whose spirit continues to live, learn, grow, and INSPIRE us all.

Miscellany Monday

Today's random & miscellaneous and catching up...

{1} Last week, we watched the BCS Championship at home. The Canadian and his buddy from back home did a low country boil - it was great!

We did our best to explain the magnitude of college football and of this game to our visiting friend, but I don't think you can really "get it" unless you grew up around here.

{2} I still haven't made any resolutions. Maybe I really won't this year! I know I need to get fit, eat better, etc. Do I really need to proclaim a resolution to make it official?

{3} B got a great report card again - can you believe all of these pages make up his report card?

This is what I call "data overload"! I think it is great if you are an educator, but regular parents just need to see the grade.

B also lost another tooth - that makes 3 total!

b got a good report, too, and he is in line to be the Valedictorian of scissors/cutting practice. The Canadian says that is because are the only parents who let our kids play with scissors! (not true, he is just real sneaky!)

He has been hugging Possible extra tight lately, as his best buddy, my grandmother's cat, Mr. Purr Lee, isn't around anymore. Purr Lee had been whining and crying since Nanny has been sick and wants to stay right up on her bed on top of her. He was driving her and my Mother crazy, so he got sent to my Aunt's house.

{4} My Aunt and I started working on a little project yesterday - you know one of those "quick" projects, that should take an hour, but ends up taking days. Yeah, a simple scarf has turned in to a 2 day ordeal due to not having the right kind of foot, needle, and due to us not knowing where the manual to my grandmother's sewing machine is (and having no internet connection there to look it up).

Anyway, B had fun "helping" and we have it all ready to go, now. I will post a picture when we are finished.

{5} We are off to the ice rink today. B got new skates since he hit a grow spurt and the old ones are too tight.

I am SO SICK of the cold weather here, I cannot believe I am subjecting myself to an even colder atmosphere. Oh well, at least I am not at work!

A New Answer {Worry} {Prayer}

Sitting in church today, I got a word from God.
I love when that happens.
When something clicks.
When you realize the creator of the universe is sending you a direct message.

Our pastor was speaking about prayer.

Lately, I have been having trouble praying.

With my grandmother's illness, I find myself at a loss. If she is going to die, and has chosen to stop treatment, I often wonder, why pray? What do I pray for?

I don't know if I should pray for God's miraculous healing, or for His mercy in letting her go. I don't know if she wants to linger on longer, or if she is really ready. I try to pray God's will, and then I feel like, okay, then what's the point, i.e., just do what you want God, I'll stay out of it. (I have been meaning to study more on the how-tos of praying God's will). As horrible as it sounds, I have felt a little unproductive and pointless in my praying, and have had a hard time trying to put words together.

Because of this, I have been clinging to the promise in Romans 8:28...

In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groans that words cannot express.

...and I have been begging the Holy Spirit to intercede for me in prayer, and express the groans of my heart to the Lord, since I have been unable to do it on my own.

Back to today.

Ok, so this morning, we read a verse I have read at least a million times, Philippians 4:6...

Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. (NIV)

Due to my life-long battle with anxiety and worry, I have often clung to this verse, and spoken it repeatedly. In addition, verse 8 is one of my very favorite verses in the world.

As we were reading today, I noticed something for the very first time in verse 7.

And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus. (NIV)

All of a sudden, it was like a light bulb went off.

It was like I had received a text message from God.

Right there, nestled between 2 old verses that I have read, studied, and quoted numerous times was a new answer for me.

I realized that it doesn't matter what I pray and it doesn't matter what the outcome is. Regardless of any of that, the act of prayer itself, and the relationship it builds between me and God, will bring about that awesome sense of peace.

That peace you can't explain.

That peace that only He can provide.

That peace to endure whatever might be.

His peace.

And tonight, when I pulled the verse back up on the internet, as I was writing this post, I saw the NLT translation, which made it even clearer...

Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. ⁷Then you will experience God’s peace, which exceeds anything we can understand. His peace will guard your hearts and minds as you live in Christ Jesus.

Thank you, Lord, for sending answers, and for sending your peace, to undeserving people like me.

Silly Mama Tears

Today, B was invited to a birthday party by one of his friends from Preschool. They have remained friends this year, and kept in touch as they played soccer and hockey together.
You may remember, I whined a LOT and agonized at B having to leave his Preschool friends when he started kindergarten this Fall. One of his best buddies, Jac, was in B's 3k and 4k classes. It was particularly hard for me to explain that they would not be attending the same Kindergarten together, and B was real sad about it.

When we got to the birthday party today, all of the kids were running around having a great time, when I noticed Jac walk in. I looked up and saw that Brodie had noticed, too, and he was slowly making his way down from the playground and up to his old buddy, who was a little taller than the last time we saw him. I heard B say, a little unsure, "Jac, is that you? Is that really you?" I watched them smile and run off together, without missing a beat.

And so began the silly Mama tears.

I tried real hard to hide them, so no one would notice.
I know it is crazy, but I still miss those precious moments of Preschool, and that innocent time that will never be again. I miss those days even more right now as I think back on them, as it was before Nanny's cancer returned, and before Mother had to close her restaurant, and looking back, things just seemed a little better.

I guess those times are now officially "the good old days". Had you asked me, back then, if they were so good, I might have said, "no", but looking back now, I see clearly that they were.

Why is it that we can't know that until it is too late?

I'll tell you why. Because right now, Nanny is dying from cancer, and my Mother is still in an uncertain state, and the transition to real school has required a lot more of us, and I am back to working 2 jobs, and we are so wrapped up in our worries and the day to day of it all that we can't stop and enjoy what is now.

Even still, some how I know, or at least highly suspect, that in a few years down the road I will look back on these times as "good old days", too.

As today's party drew to a close, Brodie hated to leave, as I knew he would. He told me he needed to talk to Jac. I heard him as he went over and told Jac that he would soon be having his birthday party, and could he please come and celebrate with us. I assured them I would mail him an invitation. Then as we started to leave, Jac said, "Hey Brodie!" And Brodie turned around and Jac gave him a big hug and they both smiled so big, and so happy, and I might have remembered to pull out my camera and take a picture, if I wasn't so busy trying hard to hide more... silly Mama tears.

Miscellany Monday

Here are the most random of random thoughts on my mind this Monday!

(1) Well, we are back at work this week after a LONG Christmas Break (made longer by teacher furlough days). Being that my grandmother is ill and my Mother is caring for her, I had no "babysitters" during the break. Working will almost be like a vacation - but I will miss my little devils.

Entire bottle of Waterproof SPF - Super FUN Clean up! :/

(2) Notice the remodeling/paint in the background of the above picture of b? I am about to get on some "fixing up" of Casa de Mann. I am feeling chocolate, khaki, turquoise, lime green...but I am so not good at picking colors of paint. I always envision it differently than it turns out. I hope I do better this time!

(3) My grandmother had a couple of good days last week, but is back in a down turn. I am hoping maybe it is just the Full Moon. I love the moon, but it makes my anxiety act up. Do any of you have problems with the moon?

Taken on Saturday, not quite full.

(4) Today is National Championship today!! #14??? To be or not to be??

It's For the Birds! {Grandmother Antics}

So, my grandmother got sick again. Her cancer returned with a vengeance. Time is short and precious. Perhaps it was her medication, perhaps it was brain metastasis, but whatever caused it, she set her mind on getting B and b birds for Christmas.

Now, in regards to Possible, I have mentioned several times that I am not a cat person. Even more, I would say that I am not a bird person! Let me clarify, that I am not an animal hater. It is just that (1) I have a lot of allergies, and (2) I am the only person who cleans in our house.

So, needless to say, on Christmas Eve, I received quite a shock.

We had stopped off at my grandmother, Nanny's, for a quick visit on our way to my Mother's. We had already had our Christmas Dinner with Nanny a couple of weeks prior, so this was just to be a quick "hey, we love you" and head on up the hill visit.

When we walked in, she called the boys over close to her, so she could whisper in their ears. I saw them go in the other room and I heard the word "bird".
A bit confused, I asked, "Oh, did you get a real bird?" I was thinking she had gotten herself a bird.
She snapped a little (medicine induced I am sure), "Well what did you think I got them, fake birds?!"

The next thing I knew, my Aunt was bringing out a bird cage with B and b happily dancing behind it.

I could not speak.
I could not believe what I was witnessing.
I could not fathom that my grandmother would do such a thing without consulting me.

My sister happened to pop in, too, she said, "Oh wow, birds! Did you know?" I just scowled at her and she chose to remain quiet for her own safety.

Nanny had sent my treacherous Mother (the same one who sent Possible home with Brodie) out to do her dirty work. She requested a blue bird and a green bird, as she has always designated things (cups, plates, balls, etc.) for the boys by color. B is "blue" and b is "green".

So off we went with the birds to said Mother's house for Christmas Eve dinner. My sister had beat me there and had asked Mother, "Oh my God! Did you know Nanny got the boys birds?!" My Mother said, "Yes! She made me do it! Is Kerri mad?!?"

That was right about when I walked in.

I had a real scorcher planned for my Mother the Traitor.
And I was planning to leave those birds right there with her!

But, in light of Christmas, and of her mother's impending death, and of the joy the boys were experiencing in showing her their new pets, I just shut up.

So Devvy (B's) and Giffy Grinch (b's) came to live with us. And it hasn't been that bad.

Except that....

(1) Possible hates them.

He has only knocked the cage over once - in the wee hours of the morning, and the Canadian and I about broke our necks running downstairs to rescue those birds.

And...

(2) Devvy had to go and die!

So off I went in secret, to Petsmart , with a dead bird in a ziploc, to find a matching replacement. Because the boys will have to deal with my grandmother's death soon enough, I didn't want to put more grief on them right now.

So I pulled the ole' switcheroo and was helped by the same lady who helped my Mother. She told me she had tried her best to talk my Mother out of giving us "surprise" birds, but that my Mother had told her, "You just don't understand, I cannot go back to my Mother's without these birds!"

Thankfully, the boys didn't notice the change.
And as for my grandmother, my Mother reported that she sat around smiling all week, smugly, like the cat who had eaten the canary, at the coup she had pulled off.

Looking back on this year, I want to take a moment to say thank you! Thank you for visiting my blog and sharing your comments, messages, emails, etc.

I have enjoyed the relationships I have built with so many of you.

I have non-blogger friends (gasp!-ha!) who simply don't understand how you can really share in someone's life through blogging. I really do enjoy the support system we have built through sharing our experiences as we muddle through this thing called "life". Just when I feel I might be losing it, you make me feel "normal". Isn't it amazing how we can all be so different, yet, share so many similar life experiences?

Especially in the day-to-day mundane of it all!

Thank you for sharing your life with me, and for taking part in mine.

Hope this year will be filled with good health and happiness for all!

Christmas Morning 2011

{after Santa came!}

We have a real fire place downstairs, where Santa entered - and even left ashy footprints! I didn't get a picture, though, before b smeared them all into the rug.

B reading the note Santa left for them. He read it all by himself this year. SIGH.

Santa got Coke and crackers at our house instead of cookies and milk. :)

b got everything he wanted - "Spongebob that blows bubbles and Plankton that's bigger"

B did, too, even the last minute pop gun her threw in at his visit to Santa!

It was great fun! This is the first year Santa has wrapped gifts.

Usually, they are just out and ready for play.

It was at B's request that they be wrapped.

We stayed home and did nothing all day - well actually B and b did nothing but play and the Canadian and I fought through the ridiculous packaging they put on kid's toys, installed batteries, read senseless directions, and assembled.

This Shark Air Swimmer was the WORST! The worst to assemble, the worst to operate (and it doesn't work well), and the worst value. I knew that would be the case, but it was on B's list so Santa had to bring it.

It was a wonderful holiday and B said it was the "best Christmas ever"!

All Clear! {6 wks post-op}

Still making it count, in the "all you can wear is socks" moments.

I went for my 6 week post-op examination this morning. The doctor said everything looks good. She said I still have some stitches that need to dissolve, which I found to be shocking!

Best of all, my path report was all clear with no residuals from the cervical carcinoma - thank God!!

I will be examined again in April, and then go to yearly follow-ups if all stays clear.

Miscellany Monday {Cowboy hats} {Santa} {Elves} {Krystals}

Twas the Monday before Christmas....here are the miscellaneous thoughts running through my head!

{1}

The Canadian made it back from being in Texas for a week. What a horrible week for him to be away, as it was my first week back to work, but we survived. As you can see, he brought the boys hats!

{2}

I took the boys to see Santa on Friday. Blayd actually went up there - I was shocked! He told Santa he wanted "Spongebob, and Spongebob, and Spongebob." Y'all know I don't like that yellow fellow, but b still does. This whole season he has asked for a "Spongebob that blows bubbleas and a Plankton that is bigger."

Brodie read Santa his list and threw in a wild card on me. I had limited the boys to 5 items from Santa this year and have taken care of those via online Black Friday shopping. Well, didn't Brodie just go and change his list in the car, then got up there and read Santa a new item - a pop gun!
Last June, when we were in Florida, he wanted a pop gun from Bass Pro Shop (which B calls "Jack's Crow Shop"), but he didn't get one. I have no idea why that suddenly "popped" in his mind, unless maybe it was from watching Ralphie.

Who knows, but needless to say, I was online to Bass Pro Shop late Friday night getting an $11 pop gun shipped to Casa de Mann.

Don't judge me.

I want them to enjoy the carefree magic of Christmas while they can.

{4}

I have tried to be creative with our Elf this year, but so much has been going on with my surgery and my grandmother's illness, I just haven't been feeling very creative. I hope to get it in gear this week when the boys are out of school and ramp up our holiday fun.

{5}

And speaking of my grandmother's illness, she decided to end her chemo last week. The chemo was not being administered as a cure, but to try to shrink the tumors in hopes that she would not get an intestinal blockage. She does not want to have any surgery.
Her medications have been keeping her pain free and comfortable at home. She was in absolute misery having to get out and go to the doctor for the treatments, bloodwork, etc.
Hospice is in now. Upon hearing all of this, I did what many in my family do.
Some hit the bottle, but the rest of us hit the box.

The Krystal box, that is. There isn't a whole lot that can bring as much comfort as a good cry and a sack full of Krystals. I feel so sorry for my Aunt in NY, because she is up there receiving this sad news and cannot even drown herself in proper comfort food.
There are no Krystals, Chickfila, or Sonics up her way.
How in the world do yankee folks survive any crisis without them?

Friday Favorites {stuff my boys said} {b's check-up}

Favorite thing B (age 5) said this week, while he and b were playing with a submarine and car in the tub...

"Hey Mommy, we're playing Titanic and iceberg" Lightning McQueen was the iceberg. Do you remember a long long time ago the Titanic hit the iceberg and sank? Did we go on the Titanic, was it that big boat we went on?"

Favorite things b (age 4) said this week...

(1) while unwrapping a scarf his teacher gave him for Christmas...

"Ohhhh just what I needed to keep me warm in the snow!" Keep in mind it was 72 degrees outside.

(2) when we pulled up at the doctor's office for his yearly exam...

"My stomach hurts, I need to see the doctor!" Then later when the nurse came to get us in the waiting room he said, "Hello Doctor!" and he ran right in the exam room, climbed up and laid straight out on the exam table.

(3) and later that night after we were home and his leg was hurting from the 5 shots he received...

"I got an emergency! I need to go to the hospital!"

Poor thing! I know his leg was sore! They put 2 shot sin one leg and 3 in the other. He was limping for a couple of days. The good news is that he is very healthy, has grown 3 inches over the last year and gained 4 pounds. The other good news is no more shots until he is 12!

After it was over, he asked to go to Cracker Barrel and I was happy to take him. Mother met us there since the Canadian was out of town and I can barely handle the 2 of them in a restaurant.

I may have broken the "no toys until after Christmas" rule, too.

He wanted some chattering teeth.

A Christmas Story - A Favorite and a First!

A Christmas Story has always been one of my favorite Christmas movies. Over the years, I always related to Ralphie, the poor soul, as he battled bullies and agonized over whether or not he was going to get his dream gift for Christmas. I spent many days in my childhood doing the same. I loved the Service Merchandise catalog and would pour through the toy section every year hoping and praying for treasured gifts. I would make numerous lists and hope that my Mother would find them. We didn't necessarily always get exactly what we wanted, but we had nice Christmases.

In addition to all of that, the movie is simply hilarious!

We watched the movie with the boys the other night, and B loved it. He has seen it before, but never paid attention to it. It was probably a little too old for him until this year anyway (he is now almost 6). He was so excited for Ralphie to get that bully and to receive his dream gift under the tree. He told me it was the best movie ever!

For some reason, while watching, I noticed several things for the first time - even though I have seen this movie at least a million times. Several things suddenly occurred to me...

(1) I no longer identify with Ralphie. I have become the Mother.
There she is spending all of her time in the kitchen, scurrying around to keep peace in the house, waiting on everyone hand and foot, trying to keep a sense of decency to things, and looking a bit haggard in the process - yep, that's me!

(2) The Canadian is the "Old Mann". Oh Lord, is it true!
With his get rich quick puzzle, his tacky taste, his hostility towards things that break and the neighbors unruly dogs, his nose buried in the sports page, his made up words (saying it is a word in Canada), his hounding of the food in the house, his bad language - yep, that's Doug! But at the same time, he shows he has a heart in the end and did in fact listen to something his child said by getting him the gun, and yes, the Canadian does have a heart in there somewhere.

(3) Brodie has become Ralphie.
He makes lists of his desired gifts, draws pictures, writes letters, drags me in to see commercials, schemes ways to try to get more items on his list (I told him to limit it to 5 items this year), writes in his journal at school about what he wants, studies toysrus.com, etc. He worries and agonizes over things like Raphie, too.

(4) Blayd is Randy the little brother.
He's the kid that won't eat, who is always running after his big brother, a bit sensitive and hiding under kitchen cabinets, and he hates to wear jackets. Definitely my little b!

It was so weird as I lay there in bed and thought about all of these connections. I am not sure exactly when these "role changes" occurred, but they have none-the-less. Isn't it funny how time goes by and even a silly little movie, that you have seen a million times, can highlight the person you were and the person you are becoming.

All I Want For Christmas is My Two Front Teeth!

You may remember that B lost his first tooth (rather traumatically) back in the summer.

Tragic story recorded here.

This weekend he told me he could show me a "trick" with his bottom tooth.

He could move it all around and lay it flat - ICK!

The Canadian offered help in getting him a visit from the Tooth Fairy.

He was all for it, but a little nervous.

No pain, though, and just a little blood.

He was thrilled!

And ready to make his requests...

And she was kind enough to oblige.

And now all he wants for Christmas is his 2 front teeth!

Not really.

He still wants 2 RC cars, a Shark Air Swimmer, and Stinky the Garbage truck.

B and the Canadian ran in the local Reindeer Run on Saturday. Brodie had a great time, even though he was disappointed not to get a medal. He is very competitive and already making plans to try to do better next year.

Christmas Parade!

After the Reindeer Run, we stayed to watch the local Christmas Parade. The boys were thrilled and B reported it was the "best parade ever". It wasn't, though. When I was a kid the parade was full of fancy floats and many bands from all of the local schools. These days, it is more of people sitting on cars and there were only 2 bands. I thought I might die standing there and had to go sit down and rest after a while. It was the longest I had been up and out since surgery.

This is when the boys yelled, "It's Doc Hudson!"

Back to Work!

I went back to work today, for a half day. It went well. I felt pretty good, and stayed seated. I was pretty sore, though from sitting up straight in the chair all day. I think I will take a pillow to sit on tomorrow. I just have to get through this week and Monday and Tuesday and we are out for Christmas!

B and the Canuck will be running in the Children's Miracle Network 1 mile Reindeer Run in the morning. I hope I am able to make it through the whole thing. I am taking a camp chair to sit with b on the sidelines.

Like it or not I have to prepare to go back to work next week, too. I may start with half days.
Luckily, we are on the count down to Christmas Break and I will only have 7 work days to get through.

After a week of cold temps, the sun came out again yesterday. It was nice to have a "winter picnic" with the boys.

I was hoping the fresh air would do me some good.

Any tips for boosting immunity? Share them please! Sinus infection going strong, but feeling better over all. Thanks for your kind words and prayers.

Still on medical leave from surgery. Why do I feel guilty about that? Why do we feel like we should push ourselves to the "nth" degree and forego medical restrictions to get back to work?

So y'all know I am not a cat person.

When I was down with the virus, Possible came and slept right beside my head. I was too

weak to move him.

It was also at this moment I noticed fleas on his face. Yay.

I had always heard cats don't like water, but never having owned a cat, I didn't realize you couldn't give them a flea bath.

Until yesterday.

Possible was, well p.i.s.s.e.d.

And I was injured.

I have a few of these on my shoulder where I literally had to PULL that cat's claws out of my skin.

Maybe he was paying me back for shutting his tail in the truck door?

Okay, so you can't bathe cats. Fiddle dee dee.

When it turned cold last week, the flashbacks began.

The Canadian in that Red Fleece he wore every single day last winter.

Or him wearing the boys' Cars Snuggie as a short robe.

I can't take it.

"Lucky" for me, the Canadian found that Dollar General had a sale.

All XXL Snuggies marked down to $10.

Now he looks like Obi Wan Kenobi walking around the house in that thing.

He wears it all of the time.

He sleeps in it.

It's gonna be a long winter!

p.s. don't judge my messy kitchen, y'all know I've been sick!

The Ever Faithful Laundry

So, I often wonder these days, what happened to the girl I was, who was rarely sick, who read 4 fitness magazines a week, who loved to work out, who went places with her hubs instead of saying she had to stay home because she was sick. And tired. Well, I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

I can't help but wonder, am I being punished? tested? attacked by the devil? what is it?

I was sick all summer due to gall bladder drama. Had surgery in July. Took a while, but then started to feel better. Blah, blah.

Then the whole cervical carcinoma fun popped up so I had the hysterectomy and bladder sling on November 15th - thinking that my Mother and Grandmother would have B and b so I could recover at home.

But, the week before my surgery, my grandmother became very ill. Her cancer has returned and so my Mother has been busy caring for her (as it should be). Then my Mother sprained her ankle. Seriously.

My Aunt and Uncle were here from NY visiting so they helped, too, along with my Aunt from Atlanta.

But, I haven't had a restful recovery. I am supposed to be out of work for at least 4 weeks. Ideally 6. But I only have enough sick leave for 4.

The week after surgery, this wonderful yucky sinus infection began. I think it has been exacerbated by my having to stay inside with the heat running.

And yesterday morning, I started vomiting and diarrhea round the clock all day. I suppose I picked up a virus at the doctor's office or b's school, because I haven't been anywhere else.

So, my aunt had to come back down from Atlanta to stay with my grandmother, so my Mom could keep my boys at her house while the Canadian was here with me.

It is all just unreal. I feel better today, but weak and dizzy.

Of course over all, I am concerned the most with my grandmother, and I wish I could be up helping my Mother. Hopefully, I will be soon.

In the meantime, the Canadian has taken charge of our ever faithful laundry.

Upon beginning said task, he has deduced that we have too many clothes and wants to bag up donations.

Go figure.

It's Monday!

Warning: I have the blahs.

13 days post-op.

I think I am sick and tired of being sick and tired.

It is hard not to be able to do anything.

My stomach has not returned to "normal" yet.

My back and legs are killing me from sitting around so much.

And I am depressed about my grandmother's cancer returning.

Blah.

We had a nice Thanksgiving.

We were all a little numb, thinking about my grandmother and all, but it was still a nice holiday.

Just as expected, I didn't make it shopping Black Friday. I am just physically not able, yet. I was there in spirit, though!

I also did some shopping online. In fact, I think I might be almost finished with the bulk of it!

We did get the Christmas Tree up this weekend - somewhat. I was not up to it, but B begged and begged and begged. So the Canadian drug it downstairs into the middle of a disastrous living room (I can't clean and no one else knows how apparently). The boys did their best to decorate it. They put most of the decorations toward the bottom and many on the same branch. It wouldn't win any prizes, but they are very proud of their work, and their joy lifts my spirits. In addition, the only casualties so far:

It's a good thing I baked 2 pies yesterday, as the Canadian has already been into this one...

I am off to spend the day with my 3 Turkeys!

and did I mention these 2 Turkeys won the Turkey Trot 1 mile run for B's Kindergarten class last week? B was SUPER proud, as was the Canadian, who said that B never stopped running the whole way - even when he begged him to take a break!

{semi} wordless wednesday {Nanny} {Pool} {Recovery} {Pies} {Black Friday}

We received bad news about my grandmother, Nanny. Her cancer is back. With a vengeance. Chemo begins next week, not as a cure, but as a measure keep her more comfortable.

I am so very ,very thankful for having her in my life.

I am still praying for a miracle.

I have nothing to lose.

This is where I have spent many of my days lately, except during those times I am just so uncomfortable I have to go to bed.

Someone please tell Possible I am not a cat person. He thinks he is my nurse.

This was taken yesterday. Yes, Yesterday. It was almost 80 degrees. I went to sit out there and "air out" a bit on the patio. It was SO hot. Before I knew it, the boys jumped were plotting to get in the water. The Canadian thought he'd be smart and dare them, thinking they's stick their foot in and refuse. Didn't work.

The water was cold, though, (60s) and they didn't stay in long.

Since I was feeling better today, I made pies for tomorrow.

I have to make 2 because the Canadian will eat a WHOLE pie by himself.

Quick Note on Recovery...

It has not been easy, but I am feeling pretty good. Today was probably my best day so far, but tonight I am pretty sore and achy - which is probably from being up more today.

We have had some wonderful meals brought to us. Tonight, my sweet friend Trish, brought an Olive Garden montage and the most delicious pie I have ever tasted. The boys even ate dinner for the first time this week - thanks Trish!

But at home, Possible will do.

They like to go on adventures

Caution to the wind

Tails make perfect leashes

when they are out exploring

and when it's time to rest

cats make good pillows

and they make good buddies

for little boys who love them

and because of that

I can love Possible, too

even though I am definitely not a cat person.

Recovery Begins! {Thankful}

When they told me that all I could wear to surgery was my socks, I decided to make it count!

The procedure went very well yesterday morning. I was in a good deal of pain/discomfort for most of yesterday, but today is much better!

The doctors have cleared me, so I hope to get to go home soon. (I am mobile blogging this post from my blackberry).

I will be excited to eat real food since I have been on liquids since Monday.

I really appreciate all of the prayers, messages, calls, etc. I know that is what got me through this so well. I did not have a total peace about it until after 9pm Monday night. I was cleaning B's room and just felt it come over me, that peaceful feeling that I was going to be okay.

miscellany monday {surgery} {again}

Hi Friends!

Monday sure did get here quickly - even after the long weekend. Here are a few quick miscellaneous items on my mind:

The Canadian was out of town all weekend, so you can imagine how restful it was for me with B and b(ages 4 and 5) alone. Not!

But, we had fun and no one got hurt. Not seriously, anyway.

I took them out to do a few things, since I am going to be "down" for a while after tomorrow.

We went to the Landings Shopping Center and walked around.

B saw this sign at Fudruckers and said, "Hey, that's just like me!" The Santa lists (and threats) have already begun at our house.

B and b decided to climb the tree outside of Baskin Robins. B told me it was okay as there were no police around. Wow! Need to work on that one.

B made a wish that Daddy would come home. He is supposed to be home this afternoon. We are still waiting.

They were excited that the horse and carriage rides are back for the holiday season.

There were, however, some not so good "fragrances of nature," coming from Dunkin, the horse.

Seems like the holiday decorations go up earlier and earlier each year.

Please remember me (and especially my surgeons) in your prayers. I am having surgery in the morning. Again. Hopefully this will be the last one for a while.

It is pretty major (hysterectomy) and I am busy making all of the 1 million arrangements for my kids.

I am about 2 steps from terrified.

Even more, I am worried about my Grandmother. She is not feeling well. She won't go to the doctor. I am scared. Please pray for her healing.

Oh well, got to go finish packing and such.

Help! I cannot think straight I have SO much to do right now. I hate feeling overwhelmed.

We had a wonderful BUSY weekend celebrating b's 4th birthday. I hope to have more time to post on that later this week.

This is the last week of soccer - thank goodness! Can you believe that I was even entertaining the idea of signing the boys up for Karate classes between now and Spring Soccer? WHY do I feel like I am slighting them if I don't have them involved in 9 million activities?

Did I mention I have TOO MUCH on my plate right now?

I am working 2 jobs, running a household, raising 2 small kids, taking an online certification course, leading Bible study, preparing for holidays coming up and I am about to go on an extended medical leave - do I have time for all of these extra things? Are we really able to enjoy anything when we cram in too much? Can I even be effective at the most important things? What are the most important things?
My judgment is clouded.

All I want to do is be a Mom. And do Mom things. But still be able to pay the bills.

Halloween 2011 {Captain America} {Spongebob ~ take two} {The Good Stuff}

Last year, one of my most read posts was

So Halloween Became Different for Me where I recounted some of the sad things that have happened at this time of year, for the last few years. This year, I find myself in yet another situation as I am facing a hysterectomy in 2 weeks due to a spot of cancer.

Even still, I have much joy.

I had such fun with B and b tonight.

There are memories I want to cherish in my heart forever.

Things that aren't important to anyone but me.

You know, the good stuff. :)

~~Things I want to remember from Halloween 2011...~~

Brodie, age 5

So excited to wear a costume to school, but so nervous that he may be the only one. Kept asking me, "Mommy, what if no one else is dressed up?"

Was very disappointed to not win the games at his class party, but handled it with dignity.

Tried to encourage others and give them tips on ways to win the contests.

Enjoyed his classmates chanting "Brodie! Brodie! Brodie!" as he competed.

Was thrilled to get to go trick-or-treating. Kept saying, "We need to get our buckets filled!" He was so disappointed at the homes that were not participating and would sigh and say, "We'll never get our buckets filled!"

He loved giving out candy, too and would yell, "Have a Happy Halloween!" as they left our door.

Blayd, age 3 (barely, will turn 4 on Sunday)

Decided ~~demanded~~ to be Spongebob again. He was Spongebob 2 years ago as well.

Bar none, this was the most enjoyable Halloween with him.

He ran right after Brodie to each house yelling, "Trick or Treat!" He would tell the home owners, "I'm Spongebob and this is Brodie, Captain America!"

He would also yell, "Thank you! Happy Halloween!" as he ran off from each house.

He was thrilled when kids came to our house and would run to the door saying, "Here comes another one!" He wanted to fill everyone's bag with lots of candy, too.

They both had fun playing the games I had setup in the living room. Earlier, at the class party when Brodie had not won any games, I told him, "That's okay, we don't always get to win, but maybe you'll win some of the games at home later." He said, "We don't have any games or prizes at home." I said, "Oh no? You just don't know what your Mother might have."
Of course his mother didn't have anything that a quick trip to Dollar Store the store couldn't cure.

Bean bag toss, spider throw, skeleton drop, bat fly and prizes!

He was quite excited upon seeing the games and prizes later at home.
We played and played, and I told him, "Don't you ever doubt your Mother again." :)

When trick-or-treating was over, I almost didn't want to come home. My legs were sore from all of the walking, but I just kept thinking, this is it.

One more holiday wrapped up and over, and they'll never be this age again.

Miscellany Monday meets Halloween 2011!

We went to a friend's house this weekend for a super fun birthday carnival. She had inflatables, games, face painting, and cute decorations. I had to take advantage and get B's picture in front of her display.

He had a great time and worked hard at organizing/inventorying his loot when we got home.

b had fun making "Mr. Candy Corn" in his class on Friday. He kept calling it a "Baby Candy Corn" as did all of the other children. I think they are on to something - looks like a baby to me, too!

It was frEEZing again at the soccer fields Saturday morning. So glad we only have 2 more weeks of Fall games.

After soccer, we finally got around to carving our pumpkins.

I had all of the necessary tools. Coffee is a must! Oh and a knife, too.

The boys were excited to help.

They don't mind a slimy mess, too much!

I didn't do a great job this year. My hands were killing me (arthritis, yes I am in my 30s!) and I kept slipping with the knife. I had to free hand that Spongebob, though, so y'all be impressed with that! b insisted on having a Spongebob face (ugh).

We had to run out to the new Dollar Tree to get pumpkin candles and guess who won a $5 gift card for having the correct answer to the Grand Opening Trivia Question - which was "What year was the movie Halloween released?" In case y'all don't know, it was 1978.

As a side note, I cannot believe I took my picture looking like that!

On Sunday afternoon, we roasted the pumpkin seeds. I just mix mine with a little olive oil and sprinkle garlic salt over the tops. I have tried many methods over the years, but I find I like the simple tastes better.

How do you roast yours?

By the way, B wanted me to count all of those seeds to see how many we had and to see if we had more than their classroom pumpkin did. I gave my best estimate haha!

So far, this has been the scariest sight around our house this Halloween. The Canadian is using this contraption to "work out" his muscles. He made me swear not to post this on facebook, but he didn't say anything about my blog! I guess it is a good thing he is not a subscriber. :)

We'll be off trick-or-treating with Captain America and Spongebob tonight.

Hip hip hooray it's Friday! Here are some of my favorites as we move in to the weekend.

Favorite SEC Snack of the Week:
Shrimp Cocktail Dip

Simple and easy - and always a big hit!

Here's what you need:

2 blocks of softened cream cheese

1 8oz tub of sour cream

garlic salt/pepper

1 bottle of cocktail sauce

1 can of tiny shrimp

1 box of Ritz crackers

Here's what you do:

Mix the sour cream, cream cheese, and garlic salt/pepper (to taste). Smooth in serving dish. In a separate dish mix the cocktail sauce and shrimp, then spread it on top. Serve with Ritz!

Autumn Skies and Life and Death

I love the sunrises in the autumn skies.

I love the sunsets, too.

I am one of those people who will pull my car over to get a picture. I think I may start taking my real camera with me for those spur of the moment shots. I may be a little crazy.

Tonight, I feel crazy.

My 5 year old has been crying and agonizing on and off all evening because he is afraid of death. I believe this somehow came out of a discussion in his music class today, where he was told Beethoven died at a young age of 35.

Tonight, he has cried, and gripped my hand, and said things like...

I am scared to die.

I don't want to die, ever.

Am I going to die?

Mommy, promise me I will never die.

I want to live on this earth forever.

I don't want you and Daddy to die.

I don't want my friends to die.

My heart is heavy, and my mind is exhausted.

Being a Mother is so very wonderful, and so very hard.

Autumn Break with

Miscellany Monday on Tuesday {Cold} {Oktoberfest} {Soccer} {Hockey} {Dream Homes}

It got cold this weekend! I was frEEZing! Had to crank up the space heater, pull out the furry slippers, flannel pjs and flannel sheets. Oh my, I am not ready for winter to come yet! Now, I know our GA winters aren't bad like others, but cold is cold to me!

We had a teacher furlough day on Friday - boo! for loss of pay, but yay! for staying in this attire all day long with coffee in hand.

It made the 9 million loads of laundry I did a little more bearable. The washer/dryer ran from about 6am to 8pm nonstop. And there was still more to do. Seriously.

We did our weekend regular soccer and hockey routine. It was frEEZing at B's 9am soccer game, but b and Woody didn't mind.

Nana brought cupcakes for an after hockey snack. But I didn't get a picture. SIGH

We also visited a Oktoberfest at Uchee Creek.

It was a nice small-scale event, as in - not overwhelming when you have 2 little kids!

It reminded me so much of being in Helen, GA for Oktoberfest - which was our yearly routine before B was born. The Canadian and I got married there, too.

In case you are wondering, b had on his SpongeBob costume. No idea why, but he wore it almost all weekend.

I so wish I had my real camera with me so I would have something better than these crappy blackberry photos!

Admission was free, and all of the inflatables and kids games & activities were free as well.

There was lots to do!

You can't see him, but B (age 5) made it all the way to the top of this Spiderman climbing thing. It was amazing, but not as amazing as b (age 3) making it 1 level below the top and falling down. He was SO upset and frustrated that he didn't make it up.

This thing was hard, and I was just thankful that no one got stuck because the Canadian and I might have died trying to climb up and retrieve them.

Our friends had a table set up at the festival advertising their nearby real estate development in Fort Mitchell, Alabama. We visited the model home on the way out.

Can you believe you can get 3 floors of over 5,ooo square feet for roughly $250k??

We were amazed at these beautiful homes, and would love to have one, but secretly all I could think about is what kind of energy it would take to clean those 3 floors after B an b had been blazing through on a daily basis.

A Visit to the Pumpkin Patch {Autumn Colors}

This past weekend, we visited a local Pumpkin Patch.

We go each year, and they have many activities in addition to shopping for pumpkins.

And even though you can't tell it in this picture, the boys were real excited and had a great time.

We went to work, searching for this year's "Great Pumpkin".

The sun was bright and hot.

All of the pumpkins seemed to call to us, "Pick me, pick me!"

The boys worked quickly, filling our wagon with potential finalists.

We worked quickly sneaking them back out.

Amid reports of pumpkin shortages, there were plenty items to choose from, and many were quite unique.

Some looked like strawberry and lace.

Some were already painted and decorated.

A few looked like snakes, all coiled up with their head and tongue out proudly.

Some looked like geese, bending over to sip from the lake.

And some looked like, well, we aren't exactly sure....

But, the Canadian was sure we hadn't seen anything like this around our house.

Tuesdays at the Table {Pumpkin Muffins} {Weight Watchers} {Hungry Girl} {Recipe}

So lately, many of my blog friends have been posting all about making their favorite pumpkin treats. I am not a cook, and especially not a baker, but I did find a recipe last year that was easy and yummy, too! As I have mentioned before, I love the Dunkin' Donut Pumpkin Muffins, and, well, these are not even close to that kind of decadent-ness, but they are good and they give you those same yummy flavors and enjoyment - for under 200 calories!

If you know the Hungry Girl, you know she likes to eat and she provides Weight Watcher information with all of her recipes. This whole cookbook is pretty good for providing easy, yet tasty alternatives to some delicious favorites.

iced 'n spiced pumpkin puddin' cupcakesPER SERVING (1 frosted cupcake):
112 calories, 1.75g fat, 200mg sodium, 22g carbs, 0.5g fiber, 12g sugars, 2g proteinPointsPlus® value 3*
Here's what you need for the muffins* :

2 cups Spice Cake mix

1 can Pumpkin

1/4 cup egg substitute

1/8 tsp salt

*I didn't make the icing, but she includes a recipe for it and the whole total (for muffin and icing) is 112 calories, so my version without the icing is even less than that.

Here's what you do:

measure, pour, and mix all ingredients

batter will be lumpy

spoon batter into 12 count muffin pan

bake at 350 until toothpick comes out "dry"

They are really moist, and I like to have one warm with a dab of butter on top - yum!

The boys prefer them with a little frosting and candy corn!

How in the world is it Monday, again?

B got back in the groove this weekend with soccer (scored 6 goals!)...

and hockey.

I am glad he seems all mended from the surgery, and it will quickly become a distant memory.

b had fun on the sidelines. He still balks at organized activities. He also ran off and hid from me at the ice rink -which about gave me a heart attack. I wish he would stop doing such things! I think he is trying to make the most out of his last few weeks as a 3 year old.

And while we are on that subject guess what he recently did to my grandmother's cat?

He loves scissors.

He also loves his "spider web" Halloween decorations. Even insisted on taking it to church with 2 giant spiders in his bag. The teacher was quite surprised.

And for those reasons and more, this super cute shirt from It's In the Bag is quite fitting for our Blayd, don't you think?

And someone tell these boys it is Fall! It is hard to keep them out of the pool when the Georgia sun is so hot. They did pull out some floats and not put their heads under water, though. 72 degree water is too cold even for them.

So lately, I have been trying to eat better, exercise and lose weight to get in "shape" for my surgery. I figure if I am going to be down for 6 weeks, I had better try to do all I can before then. It has seemed so far off, though, like I had plenty of time. This weekend I realized that I am having the hysterectomy/bladder surgery in a month. I need to kick it up a notch if I am going to be in better shape in time.

Speaking of surgeries, have you ever had a Urodynamic test? I had one today in prep for the bladder surgery. Let me tell you, it is SUPER FUN. Imagine finding yourself hoisted to the ceiling with 3 catheters. I felt like kinda this car...

That is all I am going to say about that.

{three}

Today was Canadian Thanksgiving. I ran around this afternoon, trying to collect a few things to make a special dinner for the Canadian and to give the boys an opportunity to celebrate their heritage a little. B was real excited, as he loves all holidays, decorations, and reasons for celebration.

I had envisioned happy surprises, a lovely meal, laughter, and fun. But more often than not, holidays never work out that way, do they?

The food and effort was a waste. Here is the table before...

Neither the Canadian (who by the way does not read this blog), nor I, felt like eating. We have okay days and bad days at Casa de Mann. Despite my efforts, today was bad. I guess that is just the way life goes on this miscellany monday.

miscellany monday {October pool} {pumpkin} {sweet potatoes} {anniversary}

{1} October in Georgia

Yes, these were taken yesterday as B and b hit the pool. Although it has cooled off here (by our standards) these two had a little swim left in them. Also, poor B couldn't swim the last couple of weeks due to the incisions from his surgery, so I am glad he got one more time in. He was cleared by the surgeon on Friday, and still has to wait 2 more weeks before returning to sports, but he is clear to return to school today. I wish he was excited about that, but he is not.

{2} Sweet Potato Fries Fail

I tried to make sweet potato fries this weekend. They did not turn out right! I watched a demo on a cooking show which said to cut them, toss in evoo and salt, then bake until crisp (tossing often). They turned out soggy - boo! Do you think it was the glass dish? Would a pan make them crisp?

{3} Got Pumpkin?

I am getting a little worried about the possible pumpkin shortage. I was reminded by Kerri (yep, she spells it the same!) to stock up this weekend. On Friday, I got the last 3 cans off of the shelf at the corner Piggly Wiggly! I wondered if they had more in the back. On Sunday, I noticed they had put out some "off brand" so I picked up a couple of them too. Desperate times call for being safe rather than picky! (haha)

{4} Speaking of Pumpkin, Coffee, and Anniversaries

I made my first of the 2011 Fall pumpkin muffins! They were fun to have around on a weekend when you can feel the crispness of Fall in the air. I will post the how-to's on these later in the week, but they went perfect with a big pot of coffee the Canadian and I shared on Sunday. It was our anniversary and I summed it up on Facebook like this...

"So Doug and I celebrated our anniversary at MyChurch, Subway, B&N, and best of all - home - doing nothing but drinking coffee and hanging out with B and b. Great day! :)"

We have been together since 1998, but only married for the last 7 years. It truly seems like we have always been together. I can hardly remember the times B.D. (before Doug) and if you knew anything about my previous relationship, you would know that's a good, good thing!

Let's Eat Y'all! {Recipe Swap Friday} {Mexican Layer Dip}

Welcome to Friday, y'all! If you are in the Beautiful South, SEC Football (Roll Tide!) is in full swing and you need some good munchies for parties! I am linking up with my girl Daphne today and sharing a Mexican Layer dip that is always a big hit!

Here's what you need:

1 can Refried Beans

1 package of Taco Seasoning

1 package of softened Cream Cheese

1 8oz tub of Sour Cream

1 jar of Salsa

1 package of shredded lettuce

1 package of Mexican Blend shredded cheese

1 can finely chopped Black Olives

Here's what you do:

Mix half of the packet of Taco Seasoning with the Refried Beans and spread in the bottom of a glass baking dish.
Mix the other half of the Taco Seasoning with the softened cream cheese and sour cream and spread it in a layer above the beans.
Pour and smooth Salsa in a layer.
Finely chop your lettuce and sprinkle in a layer.
Add a layer of shredded cheese.
Top with finely chopped black olives. I like the chopped because they make dipping easier!

Enjoy with your favorite chips!

Side note: I am wondering these days about the pre-shredded cheese. I read on Carissa's blog that there are reports of types of plastics in shredded cheese. Has anyone else heard this? I may be moving to shredding my own cheese from here on out. What is up with all of this "stuff" they are putting in our food because it is only trace amounts that can't "hurt" us. Can't it all add up at some point and be bad? Hmmm...

Anywho...

{one} The Great White Monster

Been concerned about sugar lately. Not just about weight gain, but about the inflammatory response it can cause on your body. Seems my body is inflammation prone, too. In this categoy, I also include simple carbs like white pasta. I haven't had much of it since being back on WW lately. Ate a big serving of it one day last week and thought I might DIE. It was pure agony and I felt horrible. Might be time to say goodbye once and for all.

{two} Quick and Healthy

I whine about how long it can take to cook healthy. Last night we had the quickest healthy meal I have ever made. I turned on the broiler and threw in some asparagus (little evoo and s/p), and in another dish, mahi fillets with a teriyaki marinade. Potatoes went in the microwave and were later served topped with light cottage cheese. Total of 30 minutes prep to serve. I felt like Rachel Ray! I also felt wonderfully "unbloated" after this filling, but healthy meal.

{three} Things You Never Imagine You Will Do

B is still recovering from his surgery. We are on day 10. I spent much time this weekend picking specks of glue (that liquid skin stuff) off of his "nether regions". He was itching to death! Those areas cannot get wet and the stitches and glue are drying out and driving him crazy.

{four} No Rest for the Recovering

This is our last week of recovery and next Monday B should be back at school. Of course his school sent home an enormous stack of work for him to complete, and computer assignments, and even asked if I could bring him up to take a reading and spelling test. I explained he can't yet put on clothes, and his teacher responded, "Well he can wear sweat pants or something." She also offered to give him a test over the phone. She is very helpful, kind, and I like her, but I say to myself, "Seriously?! This is kindergarten!" Apparently Kindergarten progress does not wait for major surgery.
