Praying for Gum
Tonight, the boys were in the bathtub playing, when Brodie noticed that I was chewing gum. He asked me if he could have a piece and I told him that I didn't have any with me to give him. He persisted and I followed up with, "Even if I did have any gum, I don't think you deserve a treat tonight after the way you have acted this evening." He had been pretty grumpy and difficult to deal with. I stepped out of the doorway for a second and suddenly heard, "Dear God, Please let me have some gum like Mommy." I whipped myself back around and saw that he was on his knees with his hands posed in prayer position. I was so surprised! I have been trying to pray with him at night, and teach him to pray, and maybe it's working! I wish I remembered to do it every night, but honestly we get so caught up in the chaos, I more often forget. As I stepped toward him, he looked up to me and said, "What's next?" I knew the word he was looking for and said, "Amen." "Amen," he said. Then, Doug, who had walked up during the prayer, handed over a piece of gum, and even though I didn't particularly want to give Brodie gum earlier, it came to mind that this was one time that I knew I could make certain that one of his prayers was answered...and so I did.
